Abstract

Copies of the first edition of the libretto of Lully's Thésée, printed by Christophe Ballard for the performances at Saint-Germain-en-Laye in January and February 1675, contain many variants: even though the same page may seem identical at a cursory glance, careful examination shows that they were printed from widely different fonts. The most obvious differences are in the various ornamental "Culs de lampe" at the end of the four first acts of the tragedy and in the different printers' flowers in the type ornaments separating the scenes. This examination sheds light on several practices in Ballard's print shop, in particular the fact that the formes used for certain pages were set aside for several weeks with a view to being reprinted. Based on the case of Thésée, this paper suggests a methodology for the classification of other librettos of operas premiered at the court of Louis XIV.
